The most important thing

December 2024

The content below is placeholder LLM output on a title I'm very interest in (The most important thing), but haven't anything original to say about it yet. I still think the ideas outlined are a great start.

Most people think about success linearly. They create long-term plans, break them into manageable steps, and follow a structured path. But what if that approach is fundamentally flawed? What if you could accomplish your 10-year plan in just sis months?

This isn’t just a thought experiment—it’s a challenge. A radical shift in thinking that forces you to focus, eliminate inefficiencies, and operate at a higher level of intensity than you thought possible.

You're capable of creating the things you have in your mind.

Build your own Power Law

Most efforts follow a predictable, incremental pattern. But in reality, the biggest breakthroughs come from a small number of decisions, investments, or actions that generate exponentially greater results. This is the power law in action. Instead of evenly distributing your effort, find the moves that will create asymmetric outcomes.

Make your own power law that matches the outcome you want.

Ask yourself:

  • What is the one thing that, if solved, removes 80% of the complexity?
  • What is the single highest-leverage action I can take today?
  • Where can I 10x results instead of chasing 10% improvements?

If your current plan takes 10 years, you’re probably moving too slowly. You’re treating all steps as equally important. Instead, flip the question: What would I do if I only had 6 months?

Good constraints force momentum

Artificial deadlines force ruthless prioritisation. They cut away unnecessary complexity and force you to operate with clarity and focus.

Consider:

  • Speed of execution: If you needed results this week, how would you act differently?
  • Radical simplification: What if you removed 90% of your process? Would it still work?
  • Leverage: Who or what can create outsized impact with minimal input?

The difference between those who create massive success and those who tread water for years is their ability to identify and act on only the essential things.

Focus is all you need

Most people fail not because they lack ability, but because they are distracted. They chase multiple ideas, hesitate, or get lost in unnecessary details.

Focus is an act of violence against all distractions. It’s saying:

  • This is the only thing that matters.
  • Everything else is noise.
  • I will remove all obstacles between me and execution.

When you apply this level of focus, you naturally accelerate. The path becomes clear, and progress compounds.

Practical implementation

If your goal is important, then act like it. Stop giving yourself the luxury of time. Instead, burn the boats and set an impossible constraint that forces you to operate on a higher level.

Ask yourself every morning: How do I accomplish my 10-year plan in 6 months?

Then, execute as though your life depends on it.
